From what I have researched this is affected by what is called the "Distance Factor" which comes from the microphone response pattern. This is actually where I first discovered this concept as I noticed that Bonn sang very far from the mic most of the time. The power of the mid voice comes from the proximity to the mic along with some implied grit.īonn would have adjusted his proximity to the mic related to the vocal range as follows: Chest voice = farthest, mid range = closest, upper range = somewhere in between/ variable.įor the studio the U 47 FET would have suited this style, but for live it would have been a different situation. The part that relates to the microphone is that the mid range is actually quiet fragile and low volume compared to the chest voice. The upper range of his singing was done with a more standard mixed voice and the occasional squeak into falsetto (note that Brian Johnson only sang falsetto). Running out of air is the new normal for me. 10 years ago if I sang Bonn's mid range I would say I felt like I was running out of air right off the bat. Considering I have done a lot of mixed voice such as Rush you would think would be easy, but it was the hardest thing I have ever done. For lack of the words to articulate his technique I just call it his mid range (although it is still very high for most people), but the way it feels in your throat is very strange and it came as a big surprise to me. The way in which Bonn gets some of his tone takes a lot of practices and experimentation. The mixed voice is very interesting as he sang a lot in the lower end of that range. That combined with some restrictions in his mouth is what gave him that nasal tone. With his chest voice (lower range) he actually did not sing in a way that classical vocalist would describe as correct as he would sing more from the throat than the chest.

At it's core there was his chest voice and mixed voice. While it is true that the mic will not add anything there is a dynamics and volume aspect at play that does make a difference in microphone selection.īonn sang with a complex set of vocal techniques on his recordings. It took a while but I'm getting closer to the tone. I'm playing with a band that is doing mostly Bonn.
